“Les processionnaires” is an installation spanning 365 days, composed of 12 acts and one performance.
The idea was to propose an original display in the main nave of the Musée de la Chartreuse. In a space where the great classics of French sculpture are exhibited, I proposed suspending 365 pieces from the footbridge that crosses the nave, with one piece created each day. The objective was to illustrate the amount of time a woman can dedicate to work over the course of a year.
The pieces are suspended above the visitors at different heights, and their wave-like arrangement forms a vast musical score. Each piece is tagged with a copper band bearing its number and the date. The pieces from each month were dyed in the same shade of red.
This year of sculpture presented a genuine challenge, both in the physical execution of the project and on a conceptual level. I endeavored to create, without an exception, a new form each day, exploring new topologies. In retrospect, this work allowed me to realize two things. The first is that my medium, seemingly simple (fibers, string, dye), is extremely versatile. The second is that my sculptures represent a large family, where certain traits are passed down from generation to generation, while others are lost over time. Sometimes, I draw on an older idea and introduce it into the series I am currently working on. Other times, a series is disrupted by the emergence of a new form or element, marking the beginning of a new family of forms. The scientists around me never cease to remind me how much this resembles the process of Darwinian evolution and selection!
