It was an incredible opportunity and a great honour to be invited to Korea to exhibit my work and represent France at the Cheongju Craft Biennale.
The story of my participation in this event is quite unique. It all began when the two curators of the biennale came across a photo of my work in a specialist magazine. Intrigued, they traced it back to me and eventually managed to get in touch, requesting a studio visit in France. I accepted, touched by their enthusiasm and determination to have me represent that year’s edition in Cheongju, South Korea.
They seemed to really have enjoyed the studio visit. And so not only did a large selection of my works travel to Korea — in a climate-controlled container — but I also made the journey myself (not in the container!). A number of my preparatory sketches were exhibited as well, and part of my studio was even recreated on site.
For this installation, I created in particular a long red piece, representative of my Lianes (Vines) series. Its radically different topology marks a clear break from my previous monumental works designed to embrace the forms of trees.
My work unfolds in large, distinct phases, carried by an organic sense of continuity. The transitions from one series to another often coincide with pivotal moments in my personal journey.
